The National Official Business Register, REGON was established on the basis of Article 41 point 1 position 1 of of the Act of 29 June 1995 on Official Statistics (Journal of Laws 2022, item  459, as amended).

Detailed rules for maintaining and updating the register are stipulated in the Regulation of the Council of Ministers of 30 November 2015 on the mode and methodology of running and updating the National Official Business Register and templates for applications, surveys and certificates (Journal of Laws 2015, item 2009, as amended).

REGON register is a continuously updated collection of information on the entities of the national economy, maintained as a computerised  system in the form of the central database and local databases.

REGON register:

• serves to achieve identification cohesion of businesses entered into other official registers and information systems of public administration,
• serves the uniformity of descriptions used in nomenclatural and classification concepts in all official registers and information systems of public administration,
• provides general characteristics of businesses operating in the national economy in following cross-sections: territorial, proprietorial, types of activity, legal form, etc.,
• enables the preparation of the list of addresses of operating businesses,
• is the basis for creating databases and data banks on businesses,
• is the main source of supplying the base of units drawn for statistical surveys.
